EMDR Therapy
Find healing from past traumas and experiences
Introduction
What is EMDR Therapy?
EMDR stands for Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing. It’s a form of therapy designed to help people heal from the emotional distress that results from disturbing life experiences, such as trauma, abuse, or loss. While traditional talk therapy can be highly effective, EMDR takes a different approach by focusing on how traumatic memories are stored in the brain and body.
When we experience a traumatic event, the brain sometimes struggles to fully process the experience. As a result, memories can become “stuck,” continuing to trigger emotional pain, anxiety, or flashbacks long after the event has passed. EMDR helps the brain reprocess these memories so that they no longer carry the same emotional charge.
How EMDR Helps:
Reduces symptoms of PTSD, anxiety, and depression
Eases emotional responses to distressing memories
Supports lasting healing by changing how the brain stores trauma
EMDR is backed by decades of research and is recognized by major organizations like the American Psychological Association and the Department of Veterans Affairs for its effectiveness in treating trauma-related conditions.
FAQs About EMDR
Do I have to talk about my trauma in detail?
No. One of the benefits of EMDR is that you don’t need to describe your trauma in depth. The process focuses more on how the memory feels and how it’s stored in the brain, rather than recounting all the details.
Is EMDR safe?
Yes, EMDR is a well researched and widely accepted therapy used by licensed professionals. Like any therapy, it can bring up strong emotions, but your therapist will guide the process at a pace that feels safe for you.
How long does EMDR therapy take?
Every person’s healing journey is different. Some people notice improvement in just a few sessions, while others may benefit from long-term support depending on the complexity of their trauma and goals.
