Drug Detox in Minnesota

At NorthStar Regional, drug detox (withdrawal management) is the first stage of treatment, not a place to wait. If you are comparing detox centers in Minnesota, ours runs in Eden Prairie, about 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. Nurses are on duty 24 hours a day, with medication managed for safety through our medical partner. Counselors are in the building from day one, and residential treatment is waiting after a typical 3 to 7 day stay. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and the structure here is care, not a calendar.

Why detox first

Medical Drug Detox: Safety First, Then Stabilization

Every substance leaves the body in its own way, and medical drug detox at NorthStar Regional starts from that fact.

Benzodiazepine withdrawal can be unsafe without a taper managed by a doctor. Opioid withdrawal is miserable, but the withdrawal symptoms themselves are often not as dangerous. Stimulant withdrawal causes a severe crash in mood. Our team knows the difference. Each one is managed with a plan built around your body, not a standard schedule.

In practice, that means nurses on site 24 hours a day, hourly checks, and medication managed for safety through our medical partner. There is no rigid calendar. Withdrawal is hard, and a caring team adjusts your care to how you are doing, hour by hour.

Counselors are in the building from day one, so therapy begins during withdrawal, not after. Detox on its own rarely leads to lasting recovery. So ours moves you right into residential treatment or the next level of care, not home with nowhere to go next.

One Full Continuum

Where Detox Fits in the Full Addiction Treatment Continuum

Detox is stage one of six. Because the rest of the continuum is in the same system, most clients step directly from detox into high-intensity residential treatment without waiting on a referral. The plan for that step is written during detox.

“It’s about the journey. You start at the bottom and by the time you leave here, you’re going to be ready to take care of yourself.”

What to Expect

Drug Detox and Withdrawal Management Day by Day

In detox, your care team plans each day around what your body needs.

Arrive and Rest

Intake, a meal if you want one, and medical needs handled right away. Medication is started where it fits. Then your comprehensive assessment.

The Hardest Days

Nursing checks each hour, often more. The plan follows your substance. Comfort medication for opioids, careful tapers for benzodiazepines, sleep and food for stimulants.

What Happens After Detox

As your thinking clears, the next stage starts. You meet with your counselor and move right into high-intensity residential treatment or outpatient treatment.

Addiction and dual diagnosis

Treating Substance Use and Mental Health Together

Substance use and mental health make each other worse. People use meth to cope with depression, benzos to calm anxiety, and opioids to numb trauma. That is a dual diagnosis, a mental health condition and a substance use problem at the same time. Whether it is opioid use disorder or another substance use disorder, both conditions are treated here, together, from day one, in one plan. That way the cause gets treated along with the symptoms.

For Alcohol, Opioids, Meth, and Other Drugs

Every substance we treat, from the first assessment through sober living. Each one has its own page. Alcohol, opioids, meth, cocaine, benzodiazepines, marijuana, and club drugs.

For Mental Health Issues

At designated NorthStar Regional programs, we treat depression, anxiety, bipolar disorder, trauma and PTSD, ADHD, and more, along with addiction, as co-occurring care. Mental health treatment on its own is offered through our outpatient clinic in Shakopee. No established diagnosis is needed to contact us.

Inside Treatment

Therapies and Services Inside This Program

Detox is medical first, but the clinical work starts as soon as you can take it on. Your mix of therapies proven by research and support services is set at the comprehensive assessment. It is adjusted as you go.

Comprehensive Assessment

This full evaluation sets your treatment plan, and we update it as you go.

Medical Care and Psychiatry

24/7 nursing with medical and psychiatric support. MAT options such as buprenorphine (Suboxone) and naltrexone come through our medical partner.

Alcohol and Drug Counseling

Daily primary groups and mental health groups. Plus one-on-one sessions with your own licensed alcohol and drug counselor.

CBT and DBT-Informed Skills

Noticing the thought, catching the pattern, choosing differently. Plus emotion regulation and distress tolerance. Those are skills for handling strong emotions and hard moments.

EMDR for Trauma

For many clients, substance use grew around trauma. EMDR helps the brain process traumatic memories that talk therapy alone often does not resolve.

Family Therapy

Addiction lives in relationships, and so does recovery. Family sessions rebuild trust and teach the people who love you how to help.

What Recovery Makes Possible

What Life Looks Like After Treatment

Recovery is about the freedom to function. That means a job you can hold, a family that trusts you again, and an ordinary weekday that doesn’t need managing. Detox is where your body recovers from the substance. Every stage after it is where you rebuild your life. From the first assessment, the plan looks beyond sobriety to a working life. That means a job, family, a place to live, and a Minnesota winter you can get through without using.

Healing involves the whole family. Every parent, spouse, and child has been living with fear and worry too, so family work is built into the program. Our resources for families are available before your loved one ever says yes.

Before You Call

Signs You're Ready for Treatment

If you’re asking whether you have a problem, you probably already suspect the answer. Maybe you’ve hidden it, counted it, promised to stop on Monday, or woken up trying to piece together last night. Maybe you’ve quit before and it didn’t last. You don’t need to hit rock bottom to deserve help, and you don’t need to be certain to start. Being willing for even a minute is enough to make one phone call. Our treatment programs serve adults 18 and older, in a safe, judgment-free environment.

Being ready doesn’t mean you’re not afraid, and it doesn’t mean you’ve stopped doubting. It means you make the decision and let us handle the logistics. You only need one moment of willingness. We handle everything after that.

Reading this for someone you love? You can start the entire process on their behalf: call, and we’ll coach the conversation. Start with our guides for parents and for spouses and partners.

How Admission Works

What Happens From Your First Call to Your First Night

You did the hard part when you picked up the phone. Here is exactly what happens next, so nothing about day one is a mystery.

You Call and a Real Person Answers

A real person answers, usually within seconds, and asks one short question: substance use, or mental health? There is no phone tree, and you don’t have to tell your life story. We ask only what we need and handle the rest.

We Help with the Details

Our team helps review your benefits, and a short screening covers withdrawal risk, medical needs, and mental health, so you land at the right level of care. Then we schedule you, same day or next day whenever possible.

We Pick You Up

You get reminder calls and texts. Before pickup, your admissions coordinator and your driver call you together, so you know the name, the car, and the timing before it’s in your driveway. In the car: water, Gatorade, snacks, and a bagged lunch. Your driver, most often someone in long-term recovery, helps with your bags.

A Real Person Meets You When You Arrive

Your driver walks you inside and hands you off by name to the team member waiting for you. Your intake team completes your application with you. If you’re hungry, there’s a meal waiting. Treatment starts, and you never carried the logistics.

“The client has done the hard work by picking up the phone. We will carry them the rest of the way.”

Insurance and Payment Options

Our team helps review your benefits and handles the paperwork with you. If you have no insurance, we help walk you through enrolling for benefits. County case managers, probation officers, hospitals, and crisis teams send clients to us because, in their words, we just get it done.

Who's behind the work

About NorthStar Regional

NorthStar Regional is Minnesota’s treatment system built around access: alcohol and drug treatment centers and mental health care across multiple Twin Cities metro locations. Founded in 2015, we provide one connected continuum: detox (withdrawal management), residential, outpatient, mental health, and a sober housing pathway. Separate men’s and women’s campuses, co-occurring care at designated programs, and no faith requirement set us apart. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and if you are uninsured, our admissions team helps you through enrollment. A person can walk in with nothing and leave with everything they need to build a life.

Questions we hear every day

Common Questions About Drug Detox

Detox programs vary widely across the state. NorthStar Regional runs clinically managed and medically monitored drug detox at our withdrawal management center in Eden Prairie, about 20 minutes from downtown Minneapolis. We serve the whole Twin Cities metro and greater Minnesota. Nursing is on site 24 hours a day. You call, and we pick you up, anywhere in the metro.

Yes. Our detox serves Minneapolis and the west metro from Eden Prairie, about 20 minutes from downtown. If you can’t get here, we come to you: a vetted driver picks you up anywhere in the metro with water, electrolytes, and a meal on the way.

Most often about 3 to 7 days, depending on the substance. Opioids, meth, cocaine, and benzodiazepines each put a different strain on the body. Benzodiazepine withdrawal, in particular, needs a careful taper managed by medical staff. It is never a thing to do alone.

Opioids (including fentanyl and heroin), methamphetamine, cocaine, benzodiazepines, alcohol, and mixes of these. Your comprehensive assessment sets the plan and the medications. It also sets how long it will take.

Yes. Options such as buprenorphine (Suboxone) and naltrexone are offered through our medical partner where they fit your care. They are part of a plan, not the whole plan.

You step right into the next level inside the same system: high-intensity residential treatment, then outpatient care and relapse prevention. Detox alone often leads to relapse. That is why ours is built to move you right into the next stage.

Coverage depends on your plan, the service, eligibility, and authorization requirements. Our team helps review your benefits and available payment options. Benefits verification is not a guarantee of payment.

For some substances it is uncomfortable, and for others it is dangerous. Either way, it is lonelier and less likely to lead to lasting recovery. Clinically managed and medically monitored detox is safer, more comfortable, and connected to what comes next. Call and we will tell you what your situation needs.
