Mental Health and Addiction Services in Minnesota
Not everyone needs a full program, so NorthStar Regional offers Minnesota mental health services and addiction services that stand on their own. They include comprehensive assessments, counseling, grief counseling, anger and emotional regulation counseling, adult ADHD evaluation, and outpatient mental health care. Services run at our outpatient clinic in Shakopee and by telehealth across the state. You do not need to know your diagnosis to contact us, and when more is needed, our full continuum is one call away. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and our team helps you weigh the options.

Our Addiction and Mental Health Services
Each of these mental health services and addiction services is explained in depth. Choose a service to see exactly how it works.
Comprehensive Substance Use Assessments
A confidential evaluation of substance use, related health concerns, functioning, and recovery supports helps a qualified professional recommend appropriate care. Assessments may be requested independently or coordinated with admission.
Counseling Services
Substance use counseling supports recovery skills and relapse prevention. Outpatient mental health counseling addresses emotional and behavioral concerns. Individual and group services follow assessed needs; couples and family services depend on availability and clinical appropriateness.
Grief Counseling
Support for adults coping with loss and its effects on relationships and daily life. Counseling explores grief, strengthens coping skills, and identifies additional care when needed. Grief-related concerns may also be addressed within a substance use treatment plan.
Anger and Emotional Regulation Counseling
Counseling helps adults recognize triggers, strengthen communication, and develop healthier responses to stress and conflict. Clients seeking court- or employer-required services should confirm that the available service meets those requirements before scheduling.
Adult ADHD Evaluation
Contact our outpatient team to discuss evaluation of attention, organization, and impulse-control concerns. The clinician explains the assessment process, documentation, and any referral for specialized testing. Diagnosis, medication, and accommodation eligibility are not guaranteed.
Outpatient Mental Health
Assessment and counseling support adults experiencing mental health concerns. A substance use diagnosis or residential enrollment is not required to request these services. In-person and telehealth availability depend on clinical appropriateness and scheduling.
Our Programs
Explore withdrawal management, high- and low-intensity residential treatment, and available outpatient substance use services. Admission and transitions depend on assessed needs, program criteria, and availability.
Services vs programs
Programs vs. Standalone Services
Programs are structured treatment with stages and schedules: detox, rehab, IOP, and the full path of care. Services are the standalone pieces. One is an assessment when a county or court needs one, and another is weekly counseling that fits into a normal life. There is also grief counseling after a loss, and anger management before it costs you something else.
You do not need to know your diagnosis or level of care before contacting us; our team will help you understand available options.
More than talk therapy
Mental Health Care Built Around the Whole Person
Whichever service you start with, the same tools are behind it. These are the pieces our clinicians combine into a plan that fits your week, whether you’re in a full program or just booking an hour.
Individual Therapy and Family Therapy
Talk therapy one on one, or with the family members who share your life. The hour includes learning about your diagnosis, skills for daily living, and ways to cope between sessions. The plan is built to address the whole picture, not one symptom.
Medication Management
Medication management runs through our medical partner. Prescribing professionals work with your therapist, so medicine decisions and counseling stay linked instead of running on their own. Medicine is never assumed and never pushed. It is one tool, weighed with care.
Support Groups and Peer Support
Group psychotherapy and peer support run throughout NorthStar Regional. Clinicians bring the training and teach the skills. But group members who have lived it offer hope from their own experience. Ask which support groups fit your situation, since several meet at our outpatient clinic in Shakopee.
Verify Your Insurance
We accept most major commercial plans, Medical Assistance, and state funding. Our team helps review your benefits and what your plan covers.

Treatment Options
Therapeutic Services for Addiction and Mental Illness
Recovery rarely rests on one method. Our therapies overview lists the therapy services offered across NorthStar Regional, from CBT, DBT, and EMDR to art and music therapy. Nearly every treatment plan pairs these with group therapy, support groups, and peer support. Each standalone service above is explained in the same depth. Your comprehensive assessment decides the mix your plan starts with.
Who's behind the work
Behavioral Health Services Across the Twin Cities
NorthStar Regional provides a full continuum of care across the Twin Cities metro, from medical detox through sober living, with co-occurring mental health care at designated programs. Our clinicians, psychologists, counselors, social workers, and licensed alcohol and drug counselors are professionals with real training in what works against alcohol, drugs, and mental illness, and they have walked this road with thousands of people.
Many members of our team have been through recovery themselves, and stayed in this work because of it. Hope and healing happen here every day, and clients’ family members are part of both.
Paying for Care
Insurance and Payment Options
Our team helps review your benefits and handles the paperwork with you. If you have no insurance, we help walk you through enrolling for benefits. County case managers, probation officers, hospitals, and crisis teams send clients to us because, in their words, we just get it done.
Insurance and State Funding
Commercial plans, Medical Assistance (Medicaid), county placements, and private pay. We verify benefits and handle the paperwork with you.
We Are Here to Help
We help review your benefits, find your right starting point, and schedule you for the same day or the next whenever possible. Then we pick you up anywhere in the Twin Cities metro.
How Admission Works
What Happens From Your First Call to Your First Night
You did the hard part when you picked up the phone. Here is exactly what happens next, so nothing about day one is a mystery.
You Call and a Real Person Answers
A real person answers, usually within seconds, and asks one short question: substance use, or mental health? There is no phone tree, and you don’t have to tell your life story. We ask only what we need and handle the rest.
We Help with the Details
Our team helps review your benefits, and a short screening covers withdrawal risk, medical needs, and mental health, so you land at the right level of care. Then we schedule you, same day or next day whenever possible.
We Pick You Up
You get reminder calls and texts before pickup. For residential, your admissions coordinator and your driver also call you together, so you know who’s coming, what car to look for, and when to expect them. Many of our drivers are in long-term recovery themselves, and yours will help with your bags.
A Real Person Meets You When You Arrive
Your driver walks you inside and introduces you by name to the team member waiting for you. Your intake team completes your application with you. If you’re hungry, there’s a meal waiting. From there, treatment starts, and we help take care of the logistics along the way.
“The client has done the hard work by picking up the phone. We will carry them the rest of the way.”

Questions we hear every day
Common Questions About Our Mental Health Services
Do I need a diagnosis or referral to use these services?
No established diagnosis is needed to contact us. Assessment, referral, eligibility, and authorization requirements vary by service.
Where do services happen?
At our outpatient clinic in Shakopee, by telehealth anywhere in Minnesota, and inside our treatment programs across the Twin Cities metro.
Do you complete assessments for courts or counties?
Yes. If a court, county, probation officer, or employer asked you to get a substance use disorder evaluation, we can explain the assessment and the documentation it requires. We release results only with your written authorization or another legal basis, and we cannot guarantee the requesting agency will accept them.
What if the assessment says I need more than a service?
We explain the recommendation and help coordinate an appropriate referral, at NorthStar Regional or elsewhere, subject to acceptance and availability.
Is an adult ADHD evaluation available?
Yes. ADHD evaluation for adults runs at our outpatient clinic in Shakopee. It includes a structured clinical interview, standard measures, and a written report you can take to any provider. The evaluation answers the question first. Nothing about medication is assumed. Explore the ADHD evaluation service for what it covers and how to schedule.
Do you serve children or adolescents?
Our substance use treatment programs serve adults 18 and older. For children and youth, your county’s children’s mental health services and your school district’s student support team are good starting points.
Will insurance cover these services?
Coverage depends on your plan, the service, eligibility, and authorization requirements. Our team helps review your benefits and available payment options. Benefits verification is not a guarantee of payment.
