Family Therapy for Addiction

Addiction lives in relationships, and so does recovery, which is why NorthStar Regional builds family therapy for addiction into every level of care. Guided sessions rebuild trust in the right order and teach the difference between helping recovery and protecting the addiction. Parents, partners, and kids have been on alert for years, so the family’s own injuries get treated too. Sessions run at our Twin Cities campuses or by telehealth statewide, and families can start before their loved one says yes. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and the skills come home with you.

Understanding the therapy

Why Family Therapy Is Part of Treatment

Addiction changes how a family works, slowly at first and then for good. Each person ends up in a role they never chose. One watches for trouble, one cleans up the problems, and one pulls away. By the time treatment starts, the substance isn’t the only pattern that needs to change.

Family therapy treats the whole family: how trust gets rebuilt, and in what order, because it doesn’t happen all at once. It covers which boundaries protect both the recovery and the relationship. And it shows how the family stops building daily life around the illness without giving up on the person. The family’s own injuries get treated too, because parents, partners, and kids have been stressed and on alert for years. They deserve care too, not just instructions.

Signs Your Family Could Benefit from Therapy

Families usually seek help for the person who’s using. These are the signs the system around them needs care too, and that’s most families we meet.

The Whole House Revolves Around The Addiction

Plans, moods, and money all depend on one person’s condition. Everyone can feel it, and nobody says it out loud.

Every Conversation Becomes THE Conversation

Or worse, total silence. Even ordinary topics end up back at the drinking or the using, so over time the family simply stopped talking.

You Can’t Tell Helping From Enabling Anymore

You’ve covered rent, called in excuses, and softened the fallout. Now you can’t tell which acts of love are feeding the illness.

Nobody Knows How To Trust Again

Promises were made and broken enough times that even real progress is met with suspicion. Rebuilding trust happens in a certain order, and families need help finding it.

The Kids Are Adapting in Ways That Scare You

One became the caretaker, one vanished into their room, one is angry at everything. Children adapt to survive. Those changes follow them into adult life.

You're Exhausted in a Way Sleep Doesn't Fix

Years of vigilance leave their own injury. Family therapy treats yours too, because you deserve care, not just instructions.

If you see your family in even a few of these, that is reason enough to call. You don’t have to wait for your loved one to say yes to treatment. Start with our guide for parents or our guide for spouses and partners. Or let a comprehensive assessment sort out where the whole family starts.

How It Helps

Family Therapy for Addiction and Mental Health

Family sessions do double duty in dual diagnosis care, which is care for addiction and a mental health condition at the same time. The same patterns that grew around the drinking also grew around the depression, the anxiety, and the trauma. Treating the family helps each condition in it. So family therapy is a working part of NorthStar Regional treatment, not something saved for the end.

For Addiction

Every substance we treat is explained on its own page, from the first assessment through sober living.

For Mental Health

At designated NorthStar Regional programs, these conditions are treated together with addiction as co-occurring care, in one plan. Standalone mental health treatment, no substance use diagnosis needed, is available through our outpatient clinic in Shakopee.

Who's behind the work

About NorthStar Regional

NorthStar Regional is Minnesota’s treatment system built around access: alcohol and drug treatment centers and mental health care across multiple Twin Cities metro locations. Founded in 2015, we provide one connected continuum: detox (withdrawal management), residential, outpatient, mental health, and a sober housing pathway. Separate men’s and women’s campuses, co-occurring care at designated programs, and no faith requirement set us apart. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and if you are uninsured, our admissions team helps you through enrollment. A person can walk in with nothing and leave with everything they need to build a life.

Paying for Care

Insurance and Payment Options

Our team helps review your benefits and handles the paperwork with you. If you have no insurance, we help walk you through enrolling for benefits. County case managers, probation officers, hospitals, and crisis teams send clients to us because, in their words, we just get it done.

How Admission Works

What Happens From Your First Call to Your First Night

You did the hard part when you picked up the phone. Here is exactly what happens next, so nothing about day one is a mystery.

You Call and a Real Person Answers

A real person answers, usually within seconds, and asks one short question: substance use, or mental health? There is no phone tree, and you don’t have to tell your life story. We ask only what we need and handle the rest.

We Help with the Details

Our team helps review your benefits, and a short screening covers withdrawal risk, medical needs, and mental health, so you land at the right level of care. Then we schedule you, same day or next day whenever possible.

We Pick You Up

You get reminder calls and texts before pickup. For residential, your admissions coordinator and your driver also call you together, so you know who’s coming, what car to look for, and when to expect them. Many of our drivers are in long-term recovery themselves, and yours will help with your bags.

A Real Person Meets You When You Arrive

Your driver walks you inside and introduces you by name to the team member waiting for you. Your intake team completes your application with you. If you’re hungry, there’s a meal waiting. From there, treatment starts, and we help take care of the logistics along the way.

Questions we hear every day

Common Questions About Family Therapy

Structured sessions where the whole family heals, not just the person in treatment. You rebuild trust and replace old patterns. You also learn to tell helping recovery from protecting the addiction. Addiction affects the whole family, so treatment should include the whole family.

Whoever holds the system together. Parents, spouses and partners, siblings, adult children, chosen family. Sessions are built around the relationships that matter, not the ones on paper.

A therapist guides the talk the family has been avoiding, and keeps it safe. How did the addiction reshape everyone’s roles, and what trust needs to be rebuilt, in what order? What boundaries protect both the recovery and the relationship? Everyone gets a chance to speak, and nobody gets ambushed.

Helping supports the person. Enabling supports the addiction. The difference changes from case to case, which is exactly why a therapist helps you tell them apart. Covering rent might be either one, depending on the week. Family sessions help you see the difference before it does harm.

Earlier than most people expect. Family work is part of the program from the start, not something saved for the end, and families can start learning and getting support before their loved one even says yes to treatment. See our guides for parents and for spouses and partners.

Yes, we offer family sessions by telehealth. That matters when loved ones are spread out across Minnesota or beyond.

Yes. Depression, anxiety, and trauma affect families just like addiction does, and the same sessions address the patterns that keep them going.

Coverage depends on your plan, the service, eligibility, and authorization requirements. Our team helps review your benefits and available payment options. Benefits verification is not a guarantee of payment.
