Attachment Disorder Treatment in Minnesota
Some adults learned early that getting close to people isn’t safe. NorthStar Regional’s attachment disorder treatment in Minnesota is for them. The rules they learned back then, like never needing anyone, never fully trusting, and always being ready to leave, don’t change on their own.
Attachment problems are behind much of the addiction we treat. A substance can feel safer than a person because it never leaves and never asks for anything. Healing happens through relationships, so our treatment is built around them. You work with a steady therapist, a group that stays together, and a campus community. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, with care at our Shakopee clinic, by telehealth, or in residential programs.

Understanding attachment disorders
What Attachment Disorders Are
Attachment is the set of expectations our earliest relationships give us: whether reaching for someone brings comfort or danger, whether needs get met or punished, whether closeness feels safe or scary. When those early bonds are chaotic, neglectful, or frightening, we learn rules to protect ourselves. Never need anyone, never fully trust, always be ready to leave, or hold on so tightly that leaving is impossible. In childhood these rules help us survive. As adults, they quietly run our relationships, and they do not change on their own.
The link to addiction is close. For people taught early that human closeness is not safe, a substance becomes a steady source of comfort that never rejects them. Treatment that ignores this treats the symptom while the loneliness underneath sits untouched. The hopeful part: attachment patterns can change. They change through experience, and mostly through relationships in therapy and in real life. Those relationships keep acting differently than the old rules predict.
What It Looks Like
Signs of an Attachment Wound
These patterns feel like personality. They are actually old rules that never got updated.
Closeness Triggers Exit Plans
Relationships go well right up until they get serious, and then you start looking for a way out. The pattern repeats with different people, which is the giveaway.
Asking For Help Feels Impossible
Asking for help feels worse than suffering alone. You are everyone’s rock, and no one looks after you. The isolation underneath is getting heavier.
Or Being Alone Feels Unbearable
The opposite rule. Panic at any distance, and love measured by constant reassurance. Relationships that fall apart under constant checking.
You Never Fully Let Anyone In
Even with people who have earned it, you still hold part of yourself back. Decades of friendship, and nobody has ever fully known you.
The Relationships Repeat
Different partners, same pattern. Chasing the ones who are not available, fleeing the ones who are. Recreating the old chaos, because at least it is familiar.
The Substance Is the Safe One
The drink or the drug became the relationship that never lets you down. When a substance is your most reliable comfort, the attachment wound needs care.
You don’t need to check every box, and a page can’t diagnose you. If several of these sound familiar, a comprehensive assessment gives you a clear answer. Mental health care at NorthStar Regional is open to you, with no established diagnosis needed to contact us, and our outpatient clinic in Shakopee sees anyone. Reading this for someone you love? Treating Attachment Disorders and Addiction Together
Understanding this changes how we treat addiction, because the addiction was never random. The substance gave reliable comfort in place of the human relationships that never felt safe. Treating both together, the substance use and the ability to connect, is what makes recovery last. One plan, one team.
For Addiction
Every substance we treat is explained on its own page, from the first assessment through sober living.
For Mental Health
At designated NorthStar Regional programs, these conditions are treated together with addiction as co-occurring care, in one plan. Standalone mental health treatment, no substance use diagnosis needed, is available through our outpatient clinic in Shakopee.
How We Treat It
How NorthStar Regional Treats Attachment Disorders
Attachment heals through relationships, so treatment is built from them. You get a steady therapist who is there, session after session. Group therapy adds people who get to know you and do not leave. And a campus community shows you every day that the old rules are not true. The clinical work names the pattern without shaming it. These rules once kept you safe, and respecting that is where changing them starts.
The specific tools start with attachment-informed individual therapy. EMDR is used where the early experiences were traumatic. DBT-informed skills help with the panic that closeness or distance triggers. Family therapy is part of it too. Sometimes it repairs the original relationships, and sometimes it helps you grieve them and build chosen ones instead. When a substance has been used in place of close relationships, the addiction work runs in the same plan. Sobriety without close relationships often ends in the same loneliness that drove the use in the first place.
Am I ready?
Signs You're Ready for Attachment Treatment
The attachment system will call this unsafe. Here is how readiness actually looks.
Your Relationships Keep Ending The Same Way
Enough relationships have ended the same way that the common factor is obvious. Seeing your own pattern clearly is the first step toward changing it.
The Self-Sufficiency Is Failing
The never-need-anyone strategy worked until it didn’t. Exhaustion from total self-reliance is a sign that the old rules need to change.
You Still Want To Be Known
Underneath everything, you want to be truly known and to stay. The fact that you still want this, despite the old rules, is the strongest sign of readiness there is.
Here is how admissions works, and the assessment that turns “maybe” into a plan.

Who's behind the work
About NorthStar Regional
NorthStar Regional is Minnesota’s treatment system built around access: alcohol and drug treatment centers and mental health care across multiple Twin Cities metro locations. Founded in 2015, we provide one connected continuum: detox (withdrawal management), residential, outpatient, mental health, and a sober housing pathway. Separate men’s and women’s campuses, co-occurring care at designated programs, and no faith requirement set us apart. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and if you are uninsured, our admissions team helps you through enrollment. A person can walk in with nothing and leave with everything they need to build a life.
Paying for Care
Insurance and Payment Options
Our team helps review your benefits and handles the paperwork with you. If you have no insurance, we help walk you through enrolling for benefits. County case managers, probation officers, hospitals, and crisis teams send clients to us because, in their words, we just get it done.
Insurance and State Funding
Commercial plans, Medical Assistance (Medicaid), county placements, and private pay. We verify benefits and handle the paperwork with you.
We Are Here to Help
We help review your benefits, find your right starting point, and schedule you for the same day or the next whenever possible. Then we pick you up anywhere in the Twin Cities metro.
How Admission Works
What Happens From Your First Call to Your First Night
You did the hard part when you picked up the phone. Here is exactly what happens next, so nothing about day one is a mystery.
You Call and a Real Person Answers
A real person answers, usually within seconds, and asks one short question: substance use, or mental health? There is no phone tree, and you don’t have to tell your life story. We ask only what we need and handle the rest.
We Help with the Details
Our team helps review your benefits, and a short screening covers withdrawal risk, medical needs, and mental health, so you land at the right level of care. Then we schedule you, same day or next day whenever possible.
We Pick You Up
You get reminder calls and texts. Before pickup, your admissions coordinator and your driver call you together, so you know the name, the car, and the timing before it’s in your driveway. In the car: water, Gatorade, snacks, and a bagged lunch. Your driver, most often someone in long-term recovery, helps with your bags.
A Real Person Meets You When You Arrive
Your driver walks you inside and hands you off by name to the team member waiting for you. Your intake team completes your application with you. If you’re hungry, there’s a meal waiting. Treatment starts, and you never carried the logistics.
“The client has done the hard work by picking up the phone. We will carry them the rest of the way.”

Questions we hear every day
Common Questions About Attachment Treatment
Do adults really have attachment disorders?
Yes, though usually not as a formal diagnosis. The official attachment disorder diagnoses are for children and are rarely given to adults. But many adults have insecure attachment patterns, and those patterns affect relationships, self-worth, and the risk of addiction. Whatever it’s called, the pattern is real.
How do attachment problems cause addiction?
Attachment problems can make addiction more likely. If getting close to people never felt safe, a substance can start to feel like the one thing you can count on. It’s always there, and it never rejects you. If treatment only addresses the addiction, the loneliness underneath is still there and can pull you back toward using. That’s why we treat both.
Can attachment styles actually change?
Yes, they can. Clinicians call this “earned security.” Patterns set early in life can change when you have repeated experiences of people treating you differently than you expect. Therapy, group work, and a recovery community can give you those experiences over time.
What does attachment therapy look like?
Attachment therapy combines several kinds of care. Regular sessions with the same therapist give you a steady relationship to work from. In group, you practice letting people get to know you. EMDR helps if your early years were traumatic, and DBT-informed skills help when getting close to someone sets off panic. Family work helps you repair your earliest relationships, or grieve them when repair isn’t possible.
Is this the same as trauma treatment?
They are closely related. Attachment wounds are usually relational trauma. That means harm that happened over time in a relationship, not in a single event. Our trauma care and attachment work share tools and often run together in one plan.
Does insurance cover attachment-focused treatment?
Coverage depends on your plan, the service, eligibility, and authorization requirements. Our team helps review your benefits and available payment options. Benefits verification is not a guarantee of payment.
