Addiction & Mental Health Treatment Programs in Minnesota

NorthStar Regional runs addiction and mental health programs in Minnesota that connect every stage of recovery in one system. Care begins with detox (withdrawal management), then moves into inpatient rehabilitation or low-intensity residential living. Outpatient options include intensive outpatient with or without lodging, telehealth, relapse prevention, and standalone mental health care. A fully separate women’s continuum and a sober housing pathway complete the system, so no one starts over with a new provider. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and your first assessment finds the right starting point.

How the system works

Levels of Care Without the Gaps

Treatment often fails during hand-offs, such as the move from detox to rehab or from discharge to housing. We have removed those hand-offs by keeping each stage in one system. Pick any program below, and your assessment will find the right place to start.

“It’s about the journey. You start at the bottom and by the time you leave here, you’re going to be ready to take care of yourself.”

What we treat

Addiction and Mental Health Treatment

Every program treats drug addiction and alcohol addiction, along with the mental health conditions that come with them. Those include depression, anxiety, trauma, and bipolar disorder. You can read about each substance on the addiction treatment hub. Each condition is covered on the mental health hub.

For Addiction

Every substance we treat is explained on its own page, from the first assessment through sober living.

For Mental Health

At designated NorthStar Regional programs, these conditions are treated together with addiction as co-occurring care, in one plan. Standalone mental health treatment, no substance use diagnosis needed, is available through our outpatient clinic in Shakopee.

What Makes Recovery Possible

A Stable Life for You and Your Family

Recovery means being able to live a normal life. That includes a job you can hold, a family that trusts you again, and a regular weekday that goes smoothly. Every program works toward the same goal, which is a stable life that lasts after your stay ends. Minnesotans leave our care with a job, a home, and people around them. They also leave with a recovery plan they have already practiced in daily life.

Healing involves the whole family. Parents, spouses, and kids have been worried and waiting too, so family work is built into the program, not an add-on. Our resources for families are available before your loved one ever says yes.

Before You Call

Signs You're Ready for Treatment

If you’re asking whether you have a problem, you probably already suspect the answer. Maybe you’ve hidden your drinking, counted every drink, promised to stop on Monday, or woken up trying to piece together last night. Perhaps you’ve quit before, and it didn’t last. You don’t need to lose everything before you deserve help, and you don’t need to be certain to start. Being willing for even a minute is enough to make one phone call.

You can be ready and still feel afraid or unsure. Being ready simply means you make the decision and let us handle the details. Once you say yes, we take care of everything after that.

Reading this for someone you love? You can start the whole process for them, and when you call, we’ll coach you through that first conversation. Start with our guides for parents and for spouses and partners.

How Admission Works

What Happens From Your First Call to Your First Night

You did the hard part when you picked up the phone. Here is exactly what happens next, so nothing about day one is a mystery.

You Call and a Real Person Answers

A real person answers, usually within seconds, and asks one short question: substance use, or mental health? There is no phone tree, and you don’t have to tell your life story. We ask only what we need and handle the rest.

We Help with the Details

Our team helps review your benefits, and a short screening covers withdrawal risk, medical needs, and mental health, so you land at the right level of care. Then we schedule you, same day or next day whenever possible.

We Pick You Up

You get reminder calls and texts. Before pickup, your admissions coordinator and your driver call you together, so you know the name, the car, and the timing before it’s in your driveway. In the car: water, Gatorade, snacks, and a bagged lunch. Your driver, most often someone in long-term recovery, helps with your bags.

A Real Person Meets You When You Arrive

Your driver walks you inside and hands you off by name to the team member waiting for you. Your intake team completes your application with you. If you’re hungry, there’s a meal waiting. Treatment starts, and you never carried the logistics.

“The client has done the hard work by picking up the phone. We will carry them the rest of the way.”

Who's behind the work

About NorthStar Regional

NorthStar Regional is Minnesota’s treatment system built around access: alcohol and drug treatment centers and mental health care across multiple Twin Cities metro locations. Founded in 2015, we provide one connected continuum: detox (withdrawal management), residential, outpatient, mental health, and a sober housing pathway. Separate men’s and women’s campuses, co-occurring care at designated programs, and no faith requirement set us apart. We accept Medical Assistance (Medicaid) and most major insurers, and if you are uninsured, our admissions team helps you through enrollment. A person can walk in with nothing and leave with everything they need to build a life.

Questions we hear every day

Common Questions About Our Programs

NorthStar Regional offers a full range of addiction treatment in Minnesota, from detox to aftercare, in one connected system. Care starts with medical detox (alcohol and drug) and high-intensity residential treatment on separate men’s and women’s campuses, plus a rehab program just for women. After that, programs include low-intensity residential treatment, IOP with lodging, intensive outpatient, virtual IOP statewide, relapse prevention, outpatient mental health, and a sober living pathway.

You don’t have to figure that out on your own. Call us, and your comprehensive assessment will help match you with the right level of care.

A continuum of care means every level of treatment happens within one system. When you finish one level, you usually don’t need to find a new provider. We help set up your next step, and you keep working with a team that knows you. Clients who complete every level of care are with NorthStar Regional for a year to 18 months.

At designated NorthStar Regional programs, yes. Those programs include co-occurring care, so depression, anxiety, trauma, and bipolar disorder are treated inside the same plan as substance use. Outpatient mental health care also stands on its own. No established diagnosis is needed to contact us.

Coverage depends on your plan, the type of service, your eligibility, and any authorization requirements. Our team can help you review your benefits and payment options. Benefits verification is not a guarantee of payment.
