Expert Guidance for Addiction and Mental Health

NorthStar Regional’s blog covers addiction, mental health, detox (withdrawal management), and family life, in plain language from our own clinical team. Every article is written for two readers at once: the person weighing treatment, and the family watching and waiting. Clinical reviewers, including our program directors and vice president of mental health, check the articles so the information holds up. Topics run from alcohol withdrawal timelines and emotional sobriety to grounding techniques, seasonal depression in Minnesota, and rebuilding trust. Nothing here replaces an assessment, but everything here is meant to make the next step clearer.

Addiction
At its plainest, emotional sobriety is the ability to feel an emotion, name it accurately, tolerate it, and choose what to do next. It is not the absence of negative emotions.

Sober living offers a shared home where residents commit to abstinence and support one another in recovery.
Mental Health
Anxiety pulls your attention inward and forward, into the body’s alarm signals and into what might happen next. Grounding exercises pull it back out to your surroundings and into the present moment.

Rule 25 was the section of Minnesota rules that governed how a chemical use assessment was carried out and how placement decisions were made. To receive public funding for chemical dependency treatment, a person needed a chemical use assessment completed by a Rule 25 assessor, and that assessment was the front of the treatment process.

Family & Loved Ones
Trust is rebuilt by a track record, not by a conversation. The person who broke it has to become predictable again over weeks and months, and the person deciding whether to trust again has to be allowed to watch and verify rather than being asked to feel differently on demand.
Mental Health
Minnesota’s darker months can bring changes in mood, sleep, and motivation that go beyond a passing slump. This article explores how to recognize seasonal depression, why daylight is only part of the picture, and how assessment and treatment can help.
Addiction
A substance use disorder is a diagnosable mental and behavioral health condition, not simply a habit or a moral failing. National surveys generally report substance use disorders separately from other mental illnesses, even though both fall within behavioral health care.

How Admission Works

How Admissions Works: Two Steps

However you got here, you are in the right place.

1

Step One: You Call

We listen to what you are struggling with, what you need, and where you want to go. Then we walk through your options and find the right starting point for you. From day one, we also help with insurance enrollment, financial assistance, clothing, and essentials.

2

Step Two: We Pick You Up

An admissions coordinator stays on the line while a carefully vetted driver, most often someone in long-term recovery, picks you up anywhere in the Twin Cities metro. In the vehicle there is water, electrolytes, and a meal on the way, because arriving cared for matters.
